Fun list. SP is my favorite of the bunch, brings back memories of party life in the 80's. Had not seen that version of the Marvin Gaye, but of course the song is a classic. Never had any use for Rundgren, and Jellyfish are new to me. So, here is my nominee for a "Want" song: The Ramones, of course! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bm51ihfi1p4

Glad our Playlists are finding new tunes for you, Charles! GROWING BIGGER EARS is the goal, after all! The Rams are the definite go-to for "I Wanna...." songs!!! I'm happy to hear you're a Green'n'Scritti fan! So few are and were. I think I would've enjoyed partying and clubbing with you in the '80s!🥳👍

I still miss those days. So carefree, though there was an undercurrent of darkness as well. While I'm currently doing a bit of a dive into the past, I also hope I've been able to find some new artists for you!

Big Scritti fan here, too! Provision is great but I would probably count Anomie & Bonhomie as my #2 album of theirs, after Cupid & Psyche ‘85, of course. Also, my dirty secret is that I prefer I Want You to What’s Going On and Let’s Get It On!

Here are a couple more “wanting” songs for ya: https://youtu.be/Hh62kjQVSUU?si=rBClC-B0SKfDtoSg

They hold a special place en mi corazon!💖God bless Green! Did you know Miles Davis covered "Perfect Way"? https://open.spotify.com/track/3eQqek1uzLNjKTMPK4qRkL?si=745dce940b874f92

Love those Scritti Politti albums! Your mentioning of them makes me want to pull out the LPs (I may only have Cupid) and play them/it. And I want to check out that Todd Rundgren album as the band sounds great. It’s hard for me to listen to any new Rundgren music because his voice is terrible now, and even when the songs are there, I can’t get past his voice.

I always had a soft spot in my 💖for Green and SP. However lumped into the '80s pile of electro-pop, etc of Depress Mode, Cure, Smiths, etc, all of whom I couldn't care less about, Green was SO radically different, and while bordering on fey with his perpetual falsetto, what for others would be annoying, was absolutely perfect, especially as it accompanied his relentlessly melodic tunes!

My '80s faves (short list) included Spandau, ABC, Level 42, and Scritti, and some others, but again, I had no time for the droners (as mentioned above), but all the melodies and harmonies coming from those just-mentioned were deliciously unique! I hope you'll check out my two previous Todd-centric articles (if you haven't already....the New York Dolls one, and his two boys who played minor league ball)!

Any thoughts on Jellyfish? On them at the time? If not, reflections now?

Yes! Love Jellyfish. I have seen Jason Faulkner in a few different projects -- I want to say a show with The Posies, but I'll have to check my ticket stubs (yes, I saved them all and always try and get a physical ticket whenever possible) to confirm. I think he also played at a Big Star tribute show I saw maybe 10 years ago. I moved to San Francisco right around the time Spilt Milk and knew about them but didn't get to see them live. The other members I don't think I have seen play (do they still play, in other bands?)

I envy your J-fish experiences, Steve! Yay, ticket stubs! I sold my Led Zep/Houston, 1970 stub for $100 on eBay a couple decades ago! 'Twas my first concert. I was 15, and had comp floor seats Dad got for me from KLOL (he was an ad exec for them and sister AM news/talk-er, KTRH), the FM rocker I'd be sitting at the mic for 5 years later! I sold my entire stub collection, singly, around the turn of the century (well over a hundred stubs)!

Falkner at a Big Star tribute---the mind boggles! I saw them at least once (San Juan Capistrano, ca '91 or so). All you need to know: They played "Baby Come Back" by Player! To take a misunderstood and derided (by me, anyway) AM pop song, and exalt it by covering it was astounding! I made it a regular go-to at karaoke from about '14-'19!

As for current 'Fish-er work, I believe Roger Joseph Manning, Jr. has been keeping busy, solo: https://open.spotify.com/album/3XLYQ8IhJmkJPEnzisUPfZ?si=acd5f660b4814145

Interesting, Brad, I went through a big New Wave crush at the time, and my friends and I lived in the clubs, dancing to that stuff. I think we loved a lot of the same bands. I also had no use for the Smiths or Morrissey, but did like DM.

Great post, Brad - love the Toad inclusion!! Together with Gin Blossoms and Live they sort of define a 90s sound I loved and made my daily commute much more bearable - I still go back to those playlists often!!

Thanks, Michael! "All I Want" is one of those songs that (if I were a songwriter!), if that were the only song I wrote, I could say I lived a full life...I'd be satisfied! And, they did so much more! Was also on the GBs (did a couple of their songs, routinely, at karaoke a half-decade ago!). I tried, early on, to get on Live, but they didn't really stick....unlike Toad and GBs, who stuck, big-time, with me!🎼🎶🎵💪

For me, what The War On Drugs does for synth/keyboard pads, Live does with guitar riffs - irresistible
