And I'll also say that I like when you dip into my decade, the 80s....when I do a Cheap Trick or Hoodoos post I'll let you know so we can perhaps do a cross-post.
Excellent mini set list! As a huge cheap trick and hoodoo gurus fan, I was happy to see both in the top of your pops. I actually have a whole story about when I discovered hoodoo gurus that I won’t tell you here because it will likely be a post for Earworms. Suffice it to say, I discovered them at a record store after their first album, and became pretty obsessed. They haven’t made a bad album yet and their most recent a few years ago was better than I expected.
I actually didn’t know that story about what “I want you back“ was really about! Always more to learn even regarding the bands you think you know everything about!
Okay I'll play the Hoodoos all week to induce an earworm and hopefully get that story out in two posts from now! I'll put money on it being either “I Was A Kamikaze Pilot” or “Hayride to Hell.”
Thanks, Steve! Yes, I was a good decade late for the Guru train, but if they have any other songs as melodically and musically riveting, I'd like to hear 'em! I know that the compilation I caught them on in the '90s...it just flung itself off the CD, and I was hooked (on the song, anyway)!
We look forward to your eventual Hoodoo Voodoo, Steve, and our Front Row & Backstage loyal readers will want to make sure they're hooked up to your "Earworms and Song Loops" so they don't miss it and all your personal and musical musings. They can access your enjoyable archives and subscribe to E&SL here: https://earworm.substack.com/ ....and, I certainly hope they do! As always, thanks, Steve!
One of the first records I reviewed as part of my “100 new (to me) records” challenge was CT’s “In Color.” I’m a little embarrassed to say that I never realized the version of “I Want You To Want Me” most of us know is the live version.
In hindsight it makes perfect sense (crowd noise at beginning, etc.), so I’m not sure why that sailed right over my head. Hearing the original for the first time was a little strange
Thanks, Kevin.....Always a pleasure to acknowledge from whence inspiration comes! To paraphrase a TV-interview-host character on "The Dick Van Dyke Show," early '60s....."And, that's why we're here: to x-ray and enlighten!"
There are many studio songs that start (or include) fake crowd noise as an effect....don't feel too bad (Dream Academy's "Life in a Northern Town" comes immediately to mind---if you've yet to hear that, you must!)! And, as much as I loved "In Color" at the time, I probably never listened to it much, if ever, after the Budokan release.
So, last week, when researching, I did a double-take when I heard the "In Color" take for the first time in decades! "It's like a ballad!!"😲
If you'd like to challenge yourself with what might be in GROW BIGGER EARS #4's Playlist coming later this week, feel free! The theme will be "eyes," with 5 power pop and similarly adjacent songs with that word in the title! More than you'd think from which to choose!!👀
.........Said one guitarist to the other! Thanks, Paul---glad you like! I think you'll dig GROW BIGGER EARS #4, coming later this week! The common thread/theme will be one of the other body parts/senses that aren't part of the series' title!
Can you guess the sense (it's not ears), and 5 songs you think might make the GBE#4 Playlist? If you get all 5 correct, you'll win a million bucks! IMAGINE THAT MANY HORNED, MALE DEER SHOWING UP AT YOUR DOOR! Why, the mind boggles! Good luck!😊

Sounds good! I've got more CT stories/anecdotes to share than HGs! I look forward!😁👍

Hoodoo Gurus were pretty popular in my music nerd circle back in high school. I’ll be curious to read how you came into the band!
