Love how deep you go into the backstories on this stuff. Not sure I'd call it the guys shoehorning themselves into rock's landscape--after Sister Rosetta Tharpe invented rock music, the guys pretty much took over, and with a few exceptions like Suzi Q, the Runaways (and their spinoffs Joan Jett and Lita Forde), managed to keep the girls out. But I get the point of the rhetorical device here. And the Raveonettes were a great pick for #1 on the list!

Thanks for your appreciation of my format, Charles! I love the digging (like you'll find in my regular "Audio Autopsy" series), so it's nice to hear the occasional kudos for these new GROW BIGGER EARS "Audio Autopsy" Power Pop Playlists!

I'm glad you liked my placement of the Raveonettes, but (as a point of information and clarification) my Playlists are never meant to be rankings (unless so stated, and I can't imagine ever wanting to do that...everybody and their grandmothers seem to love to rank; I'll let 'em!)...instead, they are either placed relatively chronologically (like on some previous GROW BIGGER EARS efforts), or in a more or less narrative flow, either in the songs, or the stories laid out below the Playlist player (for instance, Gottehrer co-wrote the song AND figured prominently in the career of an artist also on the Playlist...managing to cover both timeline AND a threaded Playlist connection...we love that @ FR&B)!

While we're mentioning the grand ladies of rock, let us not forget the gals (who played their own instruments) who came before Suzi and the Runaways, and Joan'n'Lita: Goldie & the Gingerbreads (featuring Genya Ravan, who produced the Dead Boys' debut and an '82 Ronnie Spector album), and the Millington sisters' Fanny (early- to mid-'70s on Warner/Reprise, then Casablanca)!👩🎸🎤✨

Great piece! Chock full of candy coated ditties! And more good/bad puns than (insert good/bad pun here).

I thought you were going to get into the whole Avril Lavigne uncredited stealing of The Rubinoos tune, switching “girlfriend” for “boyfriend”. Perhaps a bonus post for that!

As a Bay Area guy, I’ve had the great fortune to see The Rubinoos maybe a dozen times and got to chat with Al Chan after a couple shows. A friend of mine is a friend of his --I’m too shy to approach myself.:)

Thanks, Steve! As for the litigious Lavigne kerfuffle, that was included in a little factoid and creative video as part of a lengthy BONUS GOLD PASS post I sent to all my paid subscribers yesterday, tub-thumping today's GBE Playlist!

Yep, all free subbies who upgrade to Paid get those periodic BONUS GOLD PASS posts!! The vid: https://youtu.be/S6EAa2uss2k

The gateway to upgrading: https://bradkyle.substack.com/about

As for The Rubinoos, I've been on them since "Beserkeley Chartbusters" and then some! Always a fave, and am beyond envious for all your Rubes interactions! I'm pretty sure Elvis and the Rubes came thru Houston in '79, and how/why the hell I missed it is beyond me! That would've covered TWO early bucket-list items! Thanks again, Steve!

Hey happy to unknowingly toss you a lob for upgrading! Which I will now do to change my label as mere freeloader!

Thanks ,Michael! Pretty sure I met the Raveonettes (at a signing at Austin's Waterloo Records in the early 2000s), but the memories are fairly fuzzy, so I didn't mention that in the post. Like with Steve and The Rubinoos, drop in on GROW BIGGER EARS long enough, and I'm BOUND to hit on a reader's little-heard faves at some point! Thanks again!🎼😁
