All singing, all dancing, all funny! As Rob Petrie nears the century mark, a celebration of the remarkably agile, hilarious song'n'dance man who idolized Stan Laurel.
Spot-on, Bob! And, how great such longtime performers like Morey and Rose Marie finally got their due with the show! I was Music Editor of my high school paper, early'-’70s, and we all loved the show, and we loved pretending we were the writing staff of The Alan Brady Show!
I wrote about it here….it was an exclusive to my paid subbies a couple summers ago, but I think “the good part” appears above the page break!
I still will watch reruns when I can. I just can't imagine what it was like to be in the room with Carl Reiner and Mel Brooks. Just imagine all of the stuff they came up with that never made it to the show. I even feel that Mary Tyler Moore was a better comic than anybody gives her credit for.
I’m gonna guess Mel and Carl could air (if allowed!) an hilarious fairly “blue” DVD script on any given day! But, you’re right….just to hear the batting around the possible lines and gags!
Which is what they wrote into the script for the Brady writing staff…the realism of what those behind-the-scenes is what’s so endearing and fascinating about the show, and what set it apart from others (as well as the well-defined home and work lives of the characters shown.
As for Mary, she certainly grew into her own as a top-notch comedy actress. The story of Carl picking her for the Laura Petrie role is classic…putting his hand on her head and leading her into Sheldon Leonard’s office….”We found her!” And, her MTM production company and show were absolutely A+!
One of my goals in life is to have as many "one-liner" comebacks as Morey. I am on track to make that happen, I just need to live until I am somewhere around 300 years old.
He was amazing….one of the challenges for producers and casting directors is discovering the abilities and talents of the actors, and trying to incorporate as much as possible into the script! Morey obviously played cello in real life, so there was that! And, “the human joke machine” had to be maximized in the show, as well!
Awesome, Brad. I came at him through Mary Poppins and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and later the Dick Van Dyke Show. Also a little film he did with Nancy Kwan that I love as a kid. Almost 100 years old is pretty remarkable, ya think?
The Dick Van Dyke show was truly spectacular. I personally think that Morey Amsterdam was highly underrated and a comic genius.

I’m rooting for your record, Bob!
