Excellent dissection into a song I never heard and plan to listen to all the versions of when I am back in stronger Wi-Fi environs. I can’t believe you found a photo of Nicorette Larson (haha) next to a guy in an Astros uniform. That is some serious sleuthing. And then, as always, thanks so much for the shoutout to my own Stack!

Thanks, Steve....I knew I had to tell the story of the real Nathan Jones when you brought up the Proper Names in Titles theme! It was going to be told at some point, but you induced its birth! Thank you for that, and I'm always happy to share your 'Stack stack!

As for Andrew Gold in an Astros jersey...pure happenstance! It would never occur to me to expect a Hollywood-based star (of any stripe) to be photographed wearing anything BUT a Dodgers jersey!

More, BTW, needs to be written about Andrew, an amazing songwriter/singer/producer/guitarist whom I've been on since the mid-'70s! He and his family were actually on "Family Feud" (the Richard Dawson edition) sometime in the '70s. I saw a re-run about a decade ago.

He was the "head of the family," and thus was Richard's interviewee at the top, and introduced the rest of his family who were also on the show. I have no idea when it was taped, but with the "Gold" name plainly displayed over their heads (as it always is on the show), I was stunned Andrew said nothing about his occupation! And, Richard didn't seem to recognize him...so, I must surmise he and fam decided to just play "as a regular family"! It's never occurred to me to hunt down a tape of that show on YT or elsewhere.

Cool! I describe myself as a lover of Motown music, but have not heard the Nathan Jones song before. Sometimes I just listen to the music and don't hear the words...¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I see you called the song "Nate"...probably to simplify typing it, however Nathan and "Nate" is typed with the same number of strokes. (including the quote marks).

Sorry, sometimes I type what I think...without thinking. Peace, Brad!

I called the song "Nate" (just as I did the Burbank teen) to be a little more informal for a moment. It seemed fun to address a song whose title was an actual name in the same way we might address a breathing human.🙋‍♂️Songs are our friends (but they won't give us a ride to the airport...at least, not on most days. I know....I've tried)!

What's fascinating about some songs (this one certainly fits...especially as most were hits of not inconsequential airplay) that have had numerous covers over a span of decades....you'd think at some point, a song might catch our ear on ONE of its rides up the chart! I'm sure you've had that experience, Paul, of...."hey, I know that song....but, that doesn't sound like the original, or the version I'm used to!"

As for your malady, I'm just the opposite: Sometimes I think what I type....without typing. Alas, this cruel mistress called writing (here's hoping her name's not "Nate")! Neat!✌

Typing what we think without thinking is what makes me return each time to read our words!;)

Fascinating stuff, Brad. I can't say I liked any of the versions much, but I very much enjoyed the story and the explanation of flanging. Now I shall check out @steve goldberg's 'stack. Cheers!

One of my most apparently controversial musical opinions is that Nathan Jones is the best Supremes song by a mile. Seems obvious to me, but man, people get heated about it sometimes.

That's the merging of the subjective nature of music, and the passion inherent therein! What raises their unique arrangement above others (and jockeys for top position in the group's canon) is the fact the gals are singing in unison....no harmonies!

Been swamped with work, but finally got to this! I always loved the Bananarama version (I love most of their stuff, total guilty-pleasure material) but had not heard the others, so this was fun. I like the Supremes version a lot too. It's a song just meant for multiple voices.

Glad you like, Charles, and you're right about the structure! If not harmonies, then a definite chorus is needed! Cheers!
