Originally pitched to Grass Roots in 1970, they passed, calling it light-weight! Instead, H, JF & R had a hit with their Roots-ian horn-driven arrangement! Grass Roots began playing it live in 1996!
Great stuff, Brad! I’m always struck by how you pull out the interconnections between musicians and various publishing/recording/producing/promoting folks and entities and make them make some sense to me. Now do the LA freeway map!! I’ve only driven through some of it once, but that was enough for this farm kid....
Thanks so much, Michael! To paraphrase Sally Field and her treacly Oscar gush, "You get me...you REALLY get me!"
A lot of it is the love of doing the research that no one else can or wants to do, yes, but also having been there in the '70s, and enjoyed "swimming" in all the liner notes, promo artist bios, and rock mags gives me a first-hand, close-up awareness of context and those threads that can't possibly be replicated on, say, Wikipedia, despite their founder, Murray Wikipedia's hard work and diligence!
Now, I'm guessing the printed Thomas Guide has been supplanted by the lady on your phone....what's her name?.....GPS?👧("Turn left in 300 feet.").....or, to quote Johnny Carson's late-night movie host character, Art Fern: "Take the Slauson cut-off, cut off your Slauson.........."🤣
Indeed! L&P don't get nearly the mad props for creative songwriting and production as they should! And, across multiple genres, too--Grass Roots, Tavares, Sam & Dave, Glen, Evie Sands, Player....the list is lengthy, if not endless! Thanks for dropping in, Songletter! 'Twas great to see you!🎶🎼🎸😁👏
I'm embarrassed to admit I didn't see that spelling error! And, it's on the very song!! Good catch! I DID notice a potential misspelling on the same label...Jimmy Webb's "Christiaan No," which, research has verified IS supposed to have two "a"s! Hoo noo?
Very interesting, but for me the only version that comes close to bearable is the same and Dave one.

As for grokking the Thomas Guide....talk about a relic of the past decades....btw, I referenced the necessary-glove-compartment-commodity Thomas Guide in one of Stephen's articles: https://bradkyle.substack.com/p/with-debut-lp-on-the-street-stephen

Great job to Lambert and Potter for producing such a successful album for Campbell!

Cool song. Number 1 in Canada eh. Did you spot the spelling error on the Glen Campbell record picture?
