Declined by The Beach Boys, Brian tossed it to an L.A. session player to thank him for a huge favor: How Glen Campbell found "Guess I'm Dumb" in 1964 + 2 covers, all spanning 4 decades!
I knew about Campbell’s guitar virtuosity but did not know theBeach Boys stories or the “Guess I’m Dumb” history. You are a veritable walking, typing music history living archive! I hope telling all these stories clears some of that space for other stuff....like the baseball postseason! I bet an Astros piece is in the works!
And, someone on FB told me that the "Guess I'm Dumb" Campbell single fetches a tidy sum on the secondary market, something I wasn't aware of, but then, it's been nearly 3 decades since I did my last record show, and knew what was hot/what was not on the record scene, at least on the secondary market (ah, the days of rented tables)!
Well, and that's why FR&B exists, Steve! My voracious appetite for the record biz minutia was so fascinating to me...I wasn't satisfied with just knowing the same names everyone else listening to pop radio knew!
In researching this (prefaced by saying I sold all 2,000 pcs of my record collection at the turn of the century), I was certain either Spring, American Spring, or The Honeys (basically the same group...Brian's wife, her sister and cousin) had recorded "Guess I'm Dumb," 'cause I had all those highly-sought-after albums (at least Spring/American Spring). But, I couldn't find hide nor hair of it online. If I still owned my albums, I could just look!
I just consigned myself to "the Honeys recorded it, but only on Glen's single doing back-up"!
As for the 'Stros, I really only do (and want to do) personality features/human interest things....there are more than enough Astro-centric writers/reporters on the 'net covering the games, themselves, so I'm not going into any of THAT!
I've got a couple bench players few have written about, that I may write something about, but frankly, waiting til '23's pre-season (with new draftees in camp, etc) might be the place I'll focus on more (note to self....Arizona Fall Lg just started, with half-a-dozen baby Astros attending...a player profile on one of those might be in the offing)! That said, "GO 'STROS!!"🏆
Great! Glen's guitar-playing is a little-known treasure (the industry knew...The Wrecking Crew years!). I look forward to checking out that playlist, too! I've always enjoyed Glen's Capitol hit-making years the public knows well.
Wow, never knew he did "Classical Gas"! Thanks, Michael! I think all the Page/Clapton/Van Halen/Hendrix fans would be stunned to see and hear Glen's rippin' on guitar! Naturally, his recording path never allowed him the chance to stretch out, with the possible exception of an album cut or two, or a variety TV show/talk show appearance, but he was immensely talented in that way that few know/knew!🎸💥

Haven't heard this song before. Guess I'm Dumb!
Now I'm stuck in a "Glen Campbell - The Capital Years 1965 - 1967" playlist. (https://open.spotify.com/album/5MrXG5mhgenrHar4S8iQdy?si=mVp8RneNTMu17ybiS8rzsg)

My favorite Glen era was his Haven/Capitol Records mid-'70s sides with (Dennis) Lambert and (Brian) Potter (worth discovering their songwriting canon) as his songwriters (on their own Capitol-distributed Haven Records): https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brian_Potter_(musician) and https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dennis_Lambert
"Country Boy (You Got Your Feet in L.A.)", "Don't Pull Your Love," for example. Thanks for the Playlist tip, and enjoy your discovery!
Great post, Brad - lots of gems in there
For a great look at just how good he was on guitar check out his cover of Mason Williams “Classical Gas” - fantastic!
