Thanks, Paul! Sometimes, I sought 'em out, like at shows, etc. Rarely, as in this case, anyway, they'll drop into MY life unannounced! Either way, that's Hollywood for ya! What's cool with Randy is that he and I had quite similar upbringings, both being raised in the Lutheran Church! Another sad and unnecessary early passing of a talented, generous, and an incredibly kind human being.
Randy was set to play at a Rock Super Bowl (lead guitar for Ozzy, obviously) in Orlando, for which I had tix, when he tragically died the day before. We were all devastated. I had seen him once before in Boston (I think, somewhere in New England), and was blown away!
Side note: local boy Pat Travers took their place in the multi-band show.
Thanks, Clint.....What a cool of-the-day story! That's a rare sinking feeling to be all set to see someone, in concert, so close to the day they die.....everyone everywhere is crushed, of course, but to have tix to see that person the next day....extra tough. Good on Travers' band to take his spot.
Thanks, Brad, esp cool to me that you rate my tale, with your amazing history!!
Yes, it sucked bigtime, but I happen to be a huge Travers fan (met him, he kissed my hand as a joke from stage at a later smaller show, but thatβs another story, lol), and he not only showed up, he showed out, no mean feat for those wanting Ozzy and Randy. Hereβs a link to the lineup for this Rock Super Bowl (there were several and all amazing!), if youβre interested (UFO/Schenker were crazy good!).
Schenker and Travers were two of the "next generation" of star guitarists (add Randy in there, too, of course, even in his short career) to pick up the mantle from Page, Clapton, et al! What a show, though....thanks for the link!
My pleasure. Both great guitarists (and many others in that generation); Schenker among my favorites. You might look at some of the other lineups from those bowlsβblow you away! I didnβt catch all, but most.
Great stuff, Brad. I'm glad you reposted this on Notes, as it predates me on Substack. Rhoads died when I was two, so obviously I never got to see him live or anything like that. But as a metal kid coming of age in the late '80s and early '90s, his work was very much on my radar. Interesting to get some more background on him and to hear about your personal connection.
Wow. Great piece of history, Brad. So cool that you knew a lot of great musicians from awesome bands.
