Thanks for reading and listening, Thea! David was yearning for dad, Jack's love and acceptance; Shaun, who also had Jack as a dad (Shirley Jones was Shaun's mom; actress Evelyn Ward was David's mom). I think Shirley (she and Shaun were a lot alike) was able to offer Shaun the kind of comfort and guidance, growing up, that was sufficient for Shaun, although he WAS allowed to run around Hollywood, quite loosely, as an adolescent! He fronted his own punk/glam band, early-'70s at 14! He was a regular scenester, hanging out regularly at Rodney Bingenheimer's English Disco on the Strip!
Your mention of the Beatles, near the end, reminded me a (perhaps apocryphal) comment I've seen attributed to Elvis that, "at least they went through it together" -- saying that they had the advantage of knowing each other when they all went through the experience of crushing fame, whereas Elvis was more alone.
But we'll see what Faith Current has to say about that . . .
Thanks, Nick! It was a fun one....Louise is such the David expert, it was easy to talk about him with her! Elvis was alone, certainly, as an artist, but he had Colonel Tom, and his entourage, for better or worse! But, I get your point. Only those 4 people know what it was like being a Beatle, and the maelstrom of craziness and pressure that went with it.
I had no idea that Shawn never got the acceptance or love from his father that he so yearned for. Totally heartbreaking. Thx for sharing.
