Another form of TT that I love are tennis tournaments, and this tag certainly had the feel of a Djokovic/Federer match. Great to learn how much (more) Vernon Reid had contributed to the music world than I realized. And some new artists/songs I’m gonna have to check out!

Thanks, Steve! I can't tell you how much I learn doing each one of these! They're fun to do, fun to pull together, and amazing to realize how much I don't know about the artists featured, Vernon Reid among them!🤯

So much fun, Brad! And since you added Zappa, I'll lob back the fact that I saw him conduct the music of Edgar Varese at a legendary concert here in NYC...let the tagging continue!

Thank you, Jeremy! This one was huge! OMG😱I had no idea Zappa did that.....but, now, how surprising would that be! My head should've gone right to...."Gee, I wonder if Frank has ever played or recorded a tribute?" Well, of course, he did! That must've been epic.

Here's a bit of a tag-back, and I haven't checked....but, THIS is a question that popped up in my head since yesterday: The record label, Varese Sarabande....named for our dear Edgar?

Expand full comment

Hah, I always thought it was...and confirmed(?) on Wikipedia: "The label's name was derived from combining French-born composer Edgard Varèse's last name with the musical term sarabande, a slow Spanish dance."

Thanks! I also always wondered what a sarabande was, too! I've always been impressed by the sublime releases that label consistently provided.

Indeed - as a soundtrack lover I have several of their LPs. Here was my introduction to the Sarabande: https://open.spotify.com/track/7jOJwH4kze92qMREpVI4cr?si=760d15c2ea8740cc

Some different music I wouldn't usually click on, but this is DISCOVERY baby! Loved it!

And, that's what's so cool about the process....it brings in different people who have unique POVs on music and their favorite artists! 👏Jeremy took me, I know, to school, and this time, it was in a good way!

Fun episode. I'm starting to really look forward to the Tuesday morning drops.

You do get a sense of the personality of each person. For some reason this time I found myself visualizing a pair of tennis players volleying from the baseline -- with the ball traveling the entire length of the court between each stroke.

I listened to more of the songs this time (even some of the ones that confused me). I did like "Growing At The Edges" and the Bossa Nova songs at the end.

Also, credit to Brad for the work he does adding the bits of research and gifs which add to the reading experience.

Edit: I see that Steve Goldberg also compared this to a tennis match, but I hadn't read his comment when I wrote mine.

And, I've been remiss in giving Steve public props for giving me the idea of making it a "Tuesday Tune Tag," recognizing my growing stress of the desire to keep "feeding this beast," but also keep true to the original FR&B mission! You rock'n'rule, Steve (readable and subscribe-able here: https://earworm.substack.com/)!

Thanks, too, Nick, for the "looking forward" note. I've been curious about that. After each one, I seem to lose at least one subbie (once, there were two). Your TT, Nick, might actually be next week...I'll be in touch by e-mail.

And, thanks, truly, for the compliments regarding how I "dress 'em up," regarding the TTs! That's one of many things I look forward to doing...I did it (and loved it) for Stephen Michael Schwartz, and the 20 articles he's graciously given us to enjoy! If you haven't seen his story on being an RCA Records recording artist (at 20) in 1974, please start here: https://bradkyle.substack.com/p/career-chord-change-stephen-michael

We also have a tag at the top of the FR&B front page! Here's the tag link: https://bradkyle.substack.com/t/stephen-michael-schwartz

Thanks again, Nick! You've made my day!

I think they do become more exciting after reading a few, getting a feel for the back-and-forth, and then having a sense of how each person brings their individual style.

I saw another substack author say that it was possible to organize posts into separate topics so that people could choose to subscribe to just one (or all) of the topics. So, if you wanted, you could allow people to subscribe to just your music history posts or just Tune Tag.

Good point; I'm just not sure how to do it now. When I started in Aug '21, I should've made FR&B and my "Behind the Astros Dugout" separate from a subscriber POV (with subbies choosing to sub to one, the other, or both), but I didn't know to even do that, then, much less know the advantages (or how to do it....which buttons to push).

As for TT, I'd stubbornly want my subbies to accept TT into the fold of everyday FR&B material (it's all really just an extension, or another way to present that which appears here, anyway).

I'd rather have TT be a "leading brand" (like my "Audio Autopsy," "Inside Tracks," "GROW BIGGER EARS," and Stephen Michael Schwartz's entertaining contributions) on the site, than to separate them out into separate entities. They all go together to make the singularly unique FR&B!

_I_ think TT is a good part of your brand. It's what caught my attention :)

Yay! Thanks! I recently finally put up my tags at the top of the FR&B main page, and I must say, even I'M impressed!

You're gonna have to ask me another hundred times🤣....Dood, are you kidding? You're on....and, thanks a ton, Kadrian, for subscribing, and for the kind words and encouragement! We'd all love to get to know you better, and as you've seen, no better way than to tag tunes!

All you have to do is e-mail me (as soon as I "hang up" here, I'll be subbing you, so you'll have my e-mail that way!) your first song....any artist, any song, any genre, any era. I'll then e-mail you back a little process info, as well as my first song, tagging yours!

Welcome, Kadrian, behind the velvet rope line, FR&B, and I know we all look forward to getting to know you!

love ending on the Jobim/Sinatra collab. just got this one on vinyl and it is so rich. Sinatra's voice is pure silk over the Brazilian bossa nova.

One of those rare musical marriages made in heaven. Don't know how tenuous it ever was at the beginning, but if either Frank or Antonio had any reservations, I'm glad they were overcome! At that point in both their careers, it's like they were meant to merge!

Thanks, Andy! I'm happy to second that emotion that even when it's informative (as this one certainly was from a "wow, that's new!" POV), it's just as fun as when the TT is chock full of Top 10 artists whose songs we hum everyday!

Very nice... it isn’t often that you have a reference to Zappa in the same column with Garland Jeffries. Both I enjoy but I think Garland is outstanding. He did a cover of “96 Tears” that will knock you backwards into September. It’s a staple in my mixes for parties I’ve seen his videos on YouTube but they don’t do justice to his album cover. I know that sounds strange having the album sound and feel better than live on a rockin’ song... I am an album listener and not so much a singles listener. I feel that the placement of songs on an album is critical and this a perfect demonstration of what I mean. By the way, your pick of Garland’s music is better than 96 Tears but I got hooked on 96 Tears mostly because I love the song.

Garland is one of the few artists that I have in album, cassette, and CD format (same albums). I think “Spanish Town” is fantastically emotive!!

What an overlooked artist in the rock pantheon! Jeffreys deserves so much more appreciation for his overall decades-long output! Mofo's been on virtually every major label extant! Atlantic, A&M, Epic (CBS), RCA/BMG, Universal (aka MCA).....talk about a seasoned veteran....and, one who's had an impact so impressive that only fellow artists are aware!
