The Ryry Rundown is real, and generations and centuries are traversed in this musical Tune Tag of trial and era. From singing to behind the mic at radio, these 2 musicians have a lot in common!๐ถ
What an interesting Tune Tag! I was astounded by Ryry's confidence, knowledge, and the fresh perspective he brought to the game. I love the fact that you guys found multiple angles to tag each song. Interestingly, when you listen to the songs back to back, they all work as a unit. Talk about coming full circle!
Thanks, Andy! Yeah, I was impressed by Master Ryry and his song selection, too, as well as his complementing one song with another. I can't help but feel how his radio experience helps inform his segue game....as he even illustrated in his Beatles/Carli example!
Those of us who routinely made mix-tapes in the '80s, or has even crafted a Spotify (or other platform) playlist likely used those same sensibilities, as we looked for songs that could, hopefully, seamlessly merge from one to another! Tune Tag uncovers yet another talent and gift that can be tunefully used!
As Billy S. once said, "Hamlet, you're a prince!" So nicely done, Ryan....I think you're making a lot of new friends here! FR&B readers....hop on down to "The Ryry Rundown" and give him a little subbie love! Summer or fall of this year, Ryry, a Part 2 is certainly in order....and, thanks again!
Yeah, that 21st-century artist trend to name one guy or gal as if a group is A) pointless B) a little precious C) self-important.....I'm undecided (or am I?)! I think Owl City was the first one I was aware of, and my immediate reaction was disbelief. Same with Charli XCX, I guess, but at least Mr. and Mrs. XCX had the good sense to give their daughter a cute name!
That would be a fun parlor game: Give 20th century single artists a 21st-century-type nebulous group name. How 'bout Bob Dylan = Minny Mumble; Elton John = King Keyboard. Kids these days!๐คฃ
Thanks, Ellen.....yeah, Ryan was fun; I enjoyed his choices and explanations! And, I really need to drop the needle on a bunch of Newski. He just may have a new favorite song for me hidden somewhere, and I wouldn't wanna miss it! That WAS a cool finish, wasn't it? It'd be, otherwise, a longshot to put those 3 together, but danged if it don't fit!๐
Thanks, Dan....yeah, my trepidation in following Newski was real, with whom I'm really impressed! It just seemed obvious to follow with another "new" artist, and that's a particular quiver of mine that's nearly empty of musical arrows! Then, I remembered Roosevelt! I like "Let it Happen" OK; for a new-century artist, though, Roosevelt (Marius Lauber) checks off so many of my "vibey" '70s-era songwriting chop preferences!
And, sharing Billy Gibbons' Houston hometown....why, it wouldn't be neighborly to not like the Top!
I support any post that mentions my favorite city in all the world, Milwaukee....and has ZZ Top in it. Did I ever tell you the time I was tripping balls in a strip club and La Grange came on? what a night.
Nope, that "La Grange" story is yet to be told (at least within my earshot), Dino, BUT, sometime in the late '60s (when I was in jr. hi), Dad told my brother and I this joke (we were all baseball fans, and regularly attended Astro games at the Dome). It's kind of a word-play thing, and we might not have quite gotten it at the time!
I'll short-hand/fast-track it: It seems Milt Famey was a good pitcher, and had his team winning in the 9th. Unfortunately, though, he had enjoyed more than one beer in the clubhouse between innings. He subsequently walked several batters, including the winning run!
Following the game, reporters covering the winning team discovered the pop-top reasons Famey lost his mound control. Hence, this headline the next day: "Schlitz: The Beer That Made Milt Famey Walk Us"! In memory of dear ole Dad!
Thanks, Chris! Yeah, I can see a little RyRey on the Roosevelt drummer! Which reminds me....I don't think I identified, in the piece, the lead Roosevelt-er....singer, songwriter, Marius Lauber! Shame on me for that oversight, 'cause I think he's wildly talented...one of the reasons I've written at least two articles singing his praises!
Thanks, Mark! Ryry had such great contributions on this one! Your Ramones comment is gold! Bless their hearts, I bet the boys, themselves, would've SO loved hearing that!

Fab work, guys!

Tunefully used โ absolutely!
Good point about radio. That makes a lot of sense.
I enjoyed what Ryry said about Beatles/Carli, and I equally enjoyed your โMr Impalaโ rant ๐๐๐
Thanks so much for tuning in this week! I had a lot of fun with Brad this week and I'm glad it shows up in how well the songs mesh together!

No prob and thanks for the shoutout Brad, I'd love to do another one of these!

What a fun TT. Ryan's response to the Ramones was a hoot.
Love hearing the Roosevelts, who you turned me on to, Brad. But really enjoyed Brett Newski's video too.
You can't go wrong with Slade,ZZ Top, and the Kinks wrapping things up.

Brad, good come back after the first song! I'm also a big fan of "Let it Happen" and "Sharp Dressed Man."

Gotta love the good ol' cream city! Definitely going to have to hear about that story sometime too!

So much good! And PS doesnโt the Roosevelt drummer have a bit of a Ryan Reynolds look? And The Kinks. Always a good call.
Thanks so much Chris, glad to have you here this week ๐
Great pairings! Brilliant job!

Good picks guys! I might have done better in school if we'd learned about the Ramones!
Thanks so much Mark! Had a fab time with Brad and loved learning about some new music from the whole thing!
