We seem to have reached a "palabra plurality" on The Tag! Lots of S's dot the lexical landscape! And, I'm also noticing a familiar familial focus: Sons, Daughters, Boys, Brothers, Sisters. Hmmm.....π€
πWe aim to please, Jami, and thanks for your kind words! More than happy to plant the rainbow on this Tune Flag!π΅π³βπPeppermint Patty, I'm sure, offers an enthusiastic second!π¬
Hi Brad: Thanks for the shout-out in the Allee Willis section! At CBS Records' Playback (1972-1974), I wasn't copy editor: I was Associate Editor, on a staff of two, with the late Bob Sarlin the editor. We gave ourselves promotions, and I was Editor, Bob was Publisher. I may have been listed as Copy Editor on the Inner Sleeve, inside which every Columbia, Epic and associated labels LP was packaged. Allee worked at CBS Records in advertising art on a different floor when I was there, and I was so socially inept that I never really said hello to her; I thought we probably would have become pals. Her greatest lyric: "Boogie Wonderland" by Earth, Wind & Fire. Not kidding. Charles White of EW&F taught her to write words that sing well, and stay away from that poetry stuff. Progressive TV and print journalist Benji Sarlin is Bob's son. Anyone who wants to pay a lot for very rare issue 1, no. 1, with "Blinded by the Light" by Springsteen as one side of the disc (Andy Pratt's "Avenging Annie" on the other), including my interview with Bruce in the issue, contact me!
Thanks, Wayne, for all that! I've made the correction. I know I once had that Springsteen/Pratt disc, as well, at one time! I probably had them all...that was the goal, not unlike hanging on to every WB "Loss Leader" 2-fer I got as they came out!
Allee was such a fascinating artist, and having those dual gigs in the biz is always a kick to see (looking at you, John Mendelsohn!! and, Lenny Kaye!! And, Patti, for that matter!) Plus, as she became disenchanted with the performing aspect of being a recording artist, she had the ability (and desire) to fine tune her songwriting (and, as you mentioned, accept tips and guidance!) to become a world class and successful songwriter! Thanks again!
Good luck on finding a new owner for the debut Playback! Step up, fellow 'Stackers!
Sons of Champlin, The Isleys, AND Donna Summer all in one tag? Now we're talkin'! I absolutely adore the first two Sons of Champlin albums. I knew about the Chicago connection, but dude, you went randomly deep on making the connections with Kristin's track by Daughter! π
The Sons of Champlin were also called Yogi Phlegm once upon a time! Yes, that's right. It's not exactly a name that will endear people to your band, but they will remember it! I have an early 45 titled 'Jesus Is Coming,' which is, by far, more of a burst of Owsley LSD than it is about the second coming of Christ! It is credited as SOC, but I think it was recorded when they were still called Yogi, as it is late '68 or '69 and precedes the first SOC album. After their first (double) album, they shortened their name to just The Sons, and that album is also a brilliant burst of brassy rock with some fantastic songwriting. There was also a strange, rare release called 'Minus Seeds & Stems,' which is musically all over the place but has some cool live nuggets. Great band!
And Donna's original, sidelong 'Love to Love You Baby' was quite the follow-up to her debut! π€
Thanks, Michael! What a perf by Kristin! And, the tune trek by her friend, Shane, was epic indeed! Did not know all that about SOC. Except for finding a couple of their albums in the KLOL/Houston control room circa '75, I didn't have much working knowledge of them or their music, beyond what I read in the rock press (reviews and such).
And, I do recall Ms. Summer's sidelong dance glance at the time! Quite the furor she caused, and Casablanca was doing all the good, with Kiss, The Village Persons, and Donna!
Say, while I've got you, and you're apparently hot to Tag, we did ours well over a year ago, and as a beer or hot sauce (I can't recall) commercial once said, "Well, that's too long!" DM me with your first song, MKF, if you're game for your long overdue Part 2!
SOC hit the perfect timeframe of late 60s/early 70s white boy brass rock, with Blood Sweat & Tears arguably being the best example. However, there were many others, including Chicago (Transit Authority).
Speaking of Donna, Casablanca, and Kiss... wasn't she briefly dating Gene Simmons?
And, I will indeed hit you up with that TT Pt. II invite! Thanks!
I think I forgot BS&T in my list of horn bands in the piece....I'll go add them...certainly one of the more influential and popular of that bunch! As for Cher, I'm pretty sure Gene made sure that she, at some point, dated him! See you in the DMs, soon......thanks!
This is a bit of a pre-comment, a way to up the numbers, as I haven't read it yet, but I'm excited that Kristin has finally become an official Tagger! You could say that I've been Champlin at the bit for this duel!
Uh-oh....our first patient presenting with comment-interruptus. Walk two dogs and call me in the morning. Adding Kristin to the Tune Tag roster was a no-brainer, and my ex-wife would certainly say, "Yep, that's Brad alright!"
But, I'd see her (Kristin....not my ex-wife) in all the comment sections I was also visiting, and I could tell she is a music lover, and thus, a Tune Tag natch!
We'll save you a place, Steve, and you can fall by and leave a post-reading comment anytime!
Aw, thanks, Pe....that's very kind of you! And, not at all an inaccurate assessment!ππThis was so much fun, and I thoroughly enjoyed playing off of Kristin's astute selections! And, bringing in Shane was an inspired move, certainly after we witnessed his masterful Tagging wizardry!
BTW, we've checked our records, and we see that it's been nearly a year since you Tagged your last Tune! Feel free to DM me a first song, and we'll get crackin' on your Part 2! And, thanks so much, again, Pe....that's a magnificently creative "Playlist" you fashioned!
I like the opening track by the Daughters. The Sons of Champlin are a nice bit of 70s pop. The "call a friend" sequence was so much fun.
I also had not listened to any of The Pointers Sisters' 80s recordings and that's just great.
I enjoyed the Pet Shop Boys and Furniture . . . really, I liked all of the songs this week. I feel like I don't have that much to say; it was just solid from top to bottom.
Give the discussion of "radio" songs at the end, I'm fond of Joni Mitchell's "You Turn Me On, I'm A Radio" (even if it was her tongue-in-cheek attempt at writing a radio-friendly hit) -- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JP1hEPRYBQs
Thanks, Nick.......I appreciate the Pet Shop Boys a lot more, now that I know that, just after that, they were a big part of what made Electronic click, loving that band as I did! So, that PSB/Dusty hit is a new one for me to play all week!
Guys, this was fantastic! I donβt even know where to begin. I loved the soulful vibes (Pointer Sisters, Isley Brothers?! Yes please!!!) and above all I loved how hard you both worked to get as many tags as possible! The whole dialogue with Kristinβs friend π€£π€£π€£ and how you both scored βpointsβ by keeping each other on your toes!
Remember what I said in my post last Sunday? We geek over seemingly trivial details, we read the small print, we scrutinise discographies, we overthink, we change our mindβ¦ guys, if you donβt love music, if you donβt love it with every inch of your soul, then no one does. Well done! ππ»ππ»ππ»ππ»ππ»
Thank you so much Andres!! Yes, I love to geek out over trivial details! And the friend I βphonedβ is my best music buddy who has 17,000+ vinyl records! (for others, I commented on Andresβ last post that I keep meaning to ask my friend if he has a will and who will inherit his records!)
Donna Summer plays into my comment on your post as well! I snagged the Donna Summerβs greatest hits album from my momβs house last fall (because no one there had a record player) - the first song I played was βOn the Radioβ because I used to play it obsessively when I was a kid! When my sister texted me that her daughter got my mom a suitcase record player for Christmas and she wanted me to bring some of her albums backβ¦that was the first one I thought of and knew I was not going to take back π€£π€£π€£
Thanks, Andy.....like so many of them, this one was one for the vaunted Tune Tag vault! And, for me, it was so much fun getting to know Kristin, who was such a good sport putting up with my giggles'n'shenanigans! And, Shane's high-falutin' digging is the stuff of legend! Glad you liked it, Andy!
This is of course brilliant which plays perfectly into my inferiority complex with my Tune Tag up next. I wish Donna Summer could be bottled and sold as a spray guaranteed to bring you joy. Dave. We have her records. Ah yes... A week of steeling myself for next week beckons.
Thanks, Dave....I've yet to dig into ours....I won't til either Wednesday or Thursday, but I'm looking forward to it! I'm sure you'll do fine....I'm like Edith Head, Max Factor, and The June Taylor Dancers all rolled up into one! It's my job to make you look good once you hit the Tune Tag stage!! As George Lopez used to say, "I GOT THIS!" He also said, "You never let me do nut-tin'!" But, that doesn't apply here!ππ
Thanks, Kevin! I'm finding that the more folks get familiar with past TTs, the more free and creative they end up being when they "step up to The Tag" themselves. It's pretty wild!πKristin's ride certainly confirms that, with introducing us to Shane, among other nifty moves!
Thatβs the funny thing about Tune Tag, sometimes the connections are so simple (Daughter to Sons) we completely overlook them! But I love the dedication you and Shane put in there Kristin!!
I LOVED that dual tag into the Pointer Sisters track! Iβd never heard of Allee Willis but she sure had some great songs under her belt!
Omigod! Brilliant Mind! Some Kind of Wonderful!! One of my favorite movies and songs and an incredible soundtrack, probably a top five soundtrack for me. I remember searching high and low forβand failing to findβthe Furniture album in my teens. I never managed to hear it until the digital era.
I love the lifetime achievement award tag, a very nice way to get that fantastic Donna Summer track in. And who even heard of the Jodie Foster film Foxes, let alone knew that she released an album?!? Absolutely wild!!
IKR? I was so very much overthinking the tag between Daughter and the Sons of Champlain! It was killing me that I couldnβt figure out the connection! Hahahaha! (I always tell my kids the best place to find something is in plain sight lol).
Yes, Some Kind of Wonderful is way up there for me! I was fortunate enough to have gotten the soundtrack on vinyl when it came out! Otherwise, Furniture would have been one of those albums I looked everywhere for! Thereβs at least 3 albums like that for me where I never found them, but thankfully ended up finding them on YouTube at some point.
I was kinda hoping, Mark, that Furniture (whom I'd not heard of before) might have members more....oh, I dunno....more fancifully named, like Overstuffed Cher, Sofa Tucker, The Sectionals-Chaise'n'Modular, and former punk rocker, Counter Stool.
I'm a member of the Bureau For the New-and-Old-Music-Impaired, a subgroup of the BFNMI, and loved learning about groups and songs I've never heard, including Daughter (North London, yeah!), Sons of Champlin (Yogi Phlegm, yes!), the Pet Shop Boys/Dusty collab, Furniture, and Jodie Foster (who knew?).
Of course so happy to hear Donna, Dusty, and the Pointer Sisters, and added Furniture and Daughter to my women in rock 'n' roll spreadsheet.
The consultation with Shane was hysterical. All is fair in TT with Brad Kyle!
Hearing you rattle off the synopsis of this TT, Ellen, is pretty dizzying, but I guess Kristin and I did all that! Whew! Imagine taking this all out on the road!
I should explain, I consider any band with a woman in it fair game for my list! Since Furniture had Sally Still on bass and Maya Gilder on keys, they doubly qualify.
With those criteria, I would say you had four 'ladies night' picks in this TT!
Oooh gurl - Dusty, The Pet Shop Boys, Jodie Foster, AND Donna Summer. This post is a Pride parade fantasy and I am HERE for it! Well done you two.
πWe aim to please, Jami, and thanks for your kind words! More than happy to plant the rainbow on this Tune Flag!π΅π³βπPeppermint Patty, I'm sure, offers an enthusiastic second!π¬

Letβs check if this weekβs Tune Tag has all the ingredients needed to make it a "great" one (pun intended) π:
1. Great music: check
2. Great writers: check
3. Great tracks you havenβt heard in a while: check
4. Great stories between the songs: check
5. Great connections tying it all together: check
No need to βMake Tune Tag Great Againβ : weβre already there.

Yes, the consultation with Shane was a riot! Heβs been a DJ since the mid-80s, so he knows soooo much, and heβs super into trivia.
