Portugal in the house, yo! One of my favorite names in the 'Stack-o-Sphere, one Nuno Babo is our special guest for a Tune Tag that features the hard, the prog, and The Dweez! Welcome aboard, y'all!
Oh Nuno, you grabbed my heart with Deep Purple and Gary Moore. That Gary Moore song is a long-time favorite, so sad and yet I love it. And Deep Purple are heaven for me.
Enjoyed Dweezil doing Stayin' Alive too. So much fun.
Thanks, Ellen! Glad you liked! I can't decide if Nuno is a scream, a hoot, or a delight! He may just be all three! After this, he may get his own show!😁👍
Fantastic TT, and the Nuno x2 connection Brad found was Doctoral-level stuff! I look forward to watching that Dweezil clip as I’m a big fan. Seen him twice and like his pop, he always sports a monster band.
I will make a correction, though, on behalf of Crowded House and New Zealanders everywhere. The band formed in Australia but are from NZ and Australia. I like to support the tiny countries when I can.
Nuno squared! I can't tell you how long I've searched for that eternally-elusive (I used to think!) equation! Be sure and read my reply to AJ, here, for an almost-brush with Dweezil! Let's just say I was close enough to catch him running in the halls (had he been)!
I'll check what I wrote on the House Most Crowded. I DO remember coming across that mixed-country element, but hope it made it into the piece!
I’ll also be annoying and mention that Tim Finn was part of Crowded House for a short period (Woodface, on tours) and then Neil‘s son Liam joined later followed by his other son Elroy and I believe both are still in the band.
That’s pretty cool to have kids that, not only are talented to begin with, but, can just slide right into Daddy’s band (looking at you, Nic Collins), when ready and, possibly, needed!
The Finn Bros are NZ natives but a couple of the CH’ers are not, though I can’t remember which off the top of my head. Split Enz are still considered NZs most famous music export in some circles. What glorious puns have you made with Dweezil’s name?
Another great Tune Tag, informative as always! I didn't know Nuno Bettencourt was Portuguese, that Dweezil assembled a crew of heavy hitters to record a Bee Gees cover, or that Satriani was a good enough singer to be invited to sing bgvs on a major record!
Believe me, I'm learnin' as I'm going, too, Adam! I think I remembered having heard the Bettencourt Nuno was Portuguese, which reminds me--I wanted to ask our Nuno if Nuno (the name, not either one of our specific ones....necessarily) is a popular and Portugal-specific name at all!
As for Dweezil....again, it kills me how he's got such natural entree just due to his daddy! "Hi, this is Dweezil...care to join me in the studio at all?" Must be nice! Not to diminish the kid's talent....but, he's a lucky cat!
Here's a brief brush-with-Dweezil tidbit just for you, Adam (shhh...don't tell a soul!): In about 1982 (Dweez would've been 13-ish), I was on the campus, one day, of his 7-12-grade school...The Harvard School in The San Fernando Valley (now called The Harvard-Westlake School, with an annual tuition of $50,000).
Anyway, my brother was touring with his one-man, two-act "Evening with John Wilkes Booth" play (I ran his lights and sound), and had booked it into the school one day. Somehow (without the internet!), I had heard Dweezil...at that point, "just" Frank's kid, not an established musician in his own right....was attending there. I never saw him (I just looked for a "tiny Frank-looking" kid), we did our show, and that was that! You may have read my article on my bro's show, but I'll leave it here for all, even though it's partially behind a paywall:
Earth, Wind & Fire sang about "The Way of the World"--"Riffs, memories, and deep-cut facts"--you're singing about "the way of the Tune Tag"! Thank you, Jon! You're right on key!
What a great Tune Tag! I’m a big fan of Gary Moore, especially his more bluesy stuff (Still Got The Blues and After Hours are my favourite albums by him).
I loved how you guys went deep diving into the credits of each song, and how you truly embraced your rabbit holes… respectively, and reciprocally! Bravo!!
This was an interesting Tune Tag for me because all of the selections were just a couple of steps away from my typical tastes -- close enough that I could appreciate the virtues and far enough to feel like it was clearly a different aesthetic.
I genuinely mean that as a compliment; one of the things I've appreciated about the music connections I've found substack is the breadth of people sharing all sorts of music with good spirits and finding the points of connection (which is, of course, what Tune Tag is all about).
Even feeling a little lost at times, I definitely had the sense of a thread connecting all of the choices.
The Ratt video was a fun way to start off -- an absolutely unapologetic distillation of a certain style of music video. Pure energy; you can see why some directors have gone from music videos to action movies (thinking of MgG or Brett Ratner but I'm sure there are other examples).
I really liked the transition from the first two into the Crowded House which just felt calm and relaxed by comparison (and is a great song).
Beyond that, I really enjoyed the final 3 selections which were all good, very different styles, but went well together.

It was a great session indeed!
👌👌

Tiny countries, unite! Knotted shoelaces, untie!

Also thinking about Willie Nelson's kids.

As for The Dweez and said puns….you know I’m not average…..you know what I….uh, mean?
What do you call a just-cut lawn of growing numbers?
Recently-mode.
Ah….there it is!🚪
LMFAO 🤣

Yes he is, from the Azores.
If you watch the video for Get the funk Out you'll notice there's a Portuguese flag laying on the PA. Cheers AJ
Incidently Steve Perry of Journey fame is also of Portuguese ascendency.
Also from the Azores, must be something in the water 😅😅😅😅
And, Nuno.....Dweezil's late mom, Gail (she passed a decade ago), was of German and Portuguese ancestry, herself!
The things I learn with you my friend!
Keanu Reaves's dad was also Portuguese. Although not a very nice person (like me) from what I've heard
Really enjoyed this. It was like a tour through riffs, memories, and deep-cut facts!

Thanks, Andy! Nuno was really fun to work with on this one, and I loved his song choices, too!

Thank you, Nick! Certainly well-said regarding this Tag, Nuno’s finds, and Tags in general!
