first of all, thank you so much for posting this, brad!! real life got hectic, so substack got put on the furthest backburner. i really appreciate it.
secondly, this was so fun to read again! relived the fun of our game! i truly had a blast digging through my crates and waiting impatiently while you dug through yours. i laughed at the time, but laughed all over again at how different our approaches and connections were. it’s like how there’s three sides to every story. person A’s, person B’s, and the truth. regardless of whatever WE were doing, the playlist is its own third thing.
i’m also delighted by the response in the comment section! wow!!! so happy other people jive with the idea. i hope everyone has at least half as much fun as we did!
again, thanks a lot, brad! when things chill out for me, i’d love to do another!
Thank you, Val....glad you enjoyed! As you mentioned, we all had a blast reading, and I'm sure there were some, who also played along whispering their next song under their breath! We've got a couple of tentative new games ready to go....all I'm asking is for anyone interested can just send me the first song. Then, we're off 'n'rolling!
Needless to say, when things open up for you, Val, feel free to send me another song for our Pt. 2! Til then............Brad😁👍
Please.........they number in the millions, Jonathan! And, that's just counting Taylor Swift's catalog! Plus, anything with a 21st-century sell-by date is bound to be on my lengthy "what the heck is THAT?" list! May I have the pleasure of challenging you to a friendly collab of "Baton"?
Thanks, Mark! It's fun to do, too....We've got some more Tune Tag collabs comin' up from a couple of talented fellow 'Stack music writers! If you'd like to throw your hat into the Tune Tag ring, lemme know! You don't have to be a writer to participate! Just one who loves music!
Thanks Brad! Please go ahead and add me to the list! I’m hoping to get my own Substack up and running in the near future (exact definition of “near” yet tbd 😝)
Let me give you the info here, Mark, on playing! This'll help others, too, who might want to play (and, they're certainly welcome to)!
We're gonna settle on 8 songs total (4 songs for each player), down from 10. A little more manageable! You e-mail me the first song...any year, genre, era, artist.
All the way, keep notes for yourself, not only on why you chose your song, but notes on your reaction to the song I, then, e-mail you! It'll be helpful to have these written kind of in real time, for when it comes time to publish.
Never a rush or deadline....Send me your first song whenever, and we'll go from there (you've seen the couple of articles, already, to get the flow). After we've each sent the other our 4 songs, one at a time, and you've finished your writing, e-mail me your notes, and I'll compile everything (with researched info, pix, etc) to make it an article.
Questions? Feel free to ask me via e-mail! Thanks, Mark!
This is a great game!! My brother and I always play games where we come up with strange song categories. Songs with « Twintros! » or almost identical openings (I feel like someone wrote about this on Substack recently). Songs with mistakes in the (« I saw her...I saw her again. Last night »), songs or outtakes where people crack up! The list goes on. But I like the game of Tag! This has legs!!
You sound like you had musical fun with bro growing up! My bro wasn't all that into music, so Dad and I did most of our fair share of word-playing (with mostly his creativity....I just laughed!) with music as the foundation! Ex: "Shall We Eat Aboard the Yacht or Dinah Shore?", "I Can't Get Over You, Babe, So Answer the Phone Yourself," and "June is Busting Out All Over, So June Better Get a Bigger Dress"!
I love that Mamas & Papas famous boo-boo! Good on producer, Lou Adler, who (just as famously) insisted that be left in!
If you'd like to try your hand at a round of Tune Tag, Britta, give a holla, yo, and lemme know here. I'd, then, e-mail you with the next steps!
I feel like this project is calling out for a tennis wordplay title. Especially since you are using “ten” songs. Volleying back and forth. Great collab idea!
I agree, and thanks again to Val! She provided the title, so I didn't want to trample on her idea! And, ten songs was her idea, too, and seems like the perfect 5-per-person total! If you're down for a round, yo, see my reply to Andy for basic instructions! I'll start thinking about a tennis title. If you're up for it, I'd love it if you kicked us off with a song of your choice!
I said those exact words to Val when she sent me her list! I never feel so old as when I rifle through songs recorded this century! And, you're most welcome, Patrick!✔
I was gonna include a pic of him (I'm afraid I don't know much, if anything, about him!)☹, but I decided to go with the group pic. Lemme know if you're game for a round of Baton, my vinyl-forward Brit buddy!
His name sounds vaguely familiar, but I'd be interested to see (hear) if anything's familiar. Tell you what.....let's start our game by you sending me a Bridges song of your choice. I already have someone a tad older (but, likely similar in style) I was gonna share with you, but let's "make it count" by making 'em the start of our game.
The beauty of this game is that it's fairly labor UN-intensive! Just send me a link to the song of your choice. What we end up writing about why we sent it can either be written when you send it (keeping it to yourself until pub date!), or later after our 5 songs (each) have been sent. We can chat later about who/when publishes, etc!
Oh, it was a gas, a stone-cold gas (as Sammy Davis, Jr. might've said)! Totally Val's idea...so, mad props to her! But, as she's a product of this-here's new century, and I inhabited the last half of the previous one, the musical discoveries were numerous and inspiring! It was like speaking to each other in different "foreign" musical languages!😁👍🎶

I'm surprised anyone could send you a song you had never heard!

Absolutely!
This was a lot of fun! A great idea and some lovely music, much of which was new to me

Woo-hoo!

As always, thanks for the new music suggestions!

Such a cool idea! I love Leon Bridges ♥️
I was gonna include a pic of him (I'm afraid I don't know much, if anything, about him!)☹, but I decided to go with the group pic. Lemme know if you're game for a round of Baton, my vinyl-forward Brit buddy!
I strongly recommend his debut album “Coming Home”. Very classic soul, 1960s kind of vibe. And yes why not! I’m always up for a music game!

Game on!
Woo-hoo! A reminder to onlookers.....please, no wagering!
Neat! I like the idea of exposing folks to vastly different forms of music, and this kind of formed a conversation of sorts.
